About This Novel

This book is Zhang Henshui's work of "learning from painful experiences". Serialization began in 1946 after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and was completed at the end of 1948, which lasted more than three years. With a cold and rational writing style, the author accuses the Japanese atrocities of war and at the same time takes the lead in exploring the national psychology and dissecting the "evil character" displayed by the Chinese people in the war of resistance. The novel takes the protagonist Li Nanquan as the axis, showing readers a picture of all living beings in the mountain village of eastern Shu. The characters are lifelike, expressive, and Adu's language is humorous and sharp, and his descriptive skills in the novel have reached a level of proficiency. Ms. Zhao Xiaoxuan, a Taiwanese scholar, called the book "Zhang Henshui's most important masterpiece and the pinnacle of his life's works."
