This book is the second of the author Pu Zi's "Wangzhuang Trilogy" ("Dragon Kiln", "Dushan" and "Dazhong"). It tells the human story of Wangzhuang, Shanhai County, a rural village in eastern Zhejiang during the Republic of China. Following the story of Wangzhuang in the late Qing Dynasty in the fifty years in "Dragon Kiln", this book tells the story of the tortuous and bizarre thirty years that the people of Wangzhuang, led by Wang Chuanfa and Wang Chuanben, experienced from "braid cutting" to the "Three People's Principles", to the corruption of the Republic of China government, the fierce anti-Japanese war, and social chaos.
