Dharma Wanderer
by Jack Kerouac
About This Novel
Rey, a young poet who yearns for freedom, travels around with a backpack all year round. One noon in September, he jumped on a freight train and hitched a ride all the way to San Francisco, where he met Jaffe, a free-spirited meditator. The two have the same spirit, and embark on a journey to pursue freedom and Zen together, gradually understanding the mystery of the world during their wandering. In order to continue his spiritual practice, Jaffe bid farewell to Rey and went to Japan. Rey hitchhiked twice across the United States alone to Desolation Peak and became a summer wildfire lookout. On the lonely mountain top, Rey spent a summer of inner peace, letting go of the inherent baggage in meditation and finding his true self.
