Verne's Science Fiction: a Lottery
About This Novel
The heroine of the novel, Hulda, has a lottery ticket in her hand. This was put in a bottle by her fiancé Ole when the fishing boat was in distress, and was retrieved from the sea when people were looking for the victims. Since the back of the lottery ticket contains Oler's last thoughts about his fiancée, Hulda regards it as a treasure and refuses to let go no matter how high the price anyone pays. But the ruthless loan shark heard that the numbers in this lottery ticket had the possibility of winning, so he used any means to squeeze the lottery ticket from Hulda's mother, Mrs. Hansen, on the pretext of asking for the deposit of the hotel she ran. However, on the day of the lottery, Hulda's family had good luck: Hulda's fiancé Ole came back unexpectedly after escaping from the sea; her family's ticket indeed won the jackpot. The lottery ticket had been redeemed from the loan shark for 15,000 marks by Mr. Hogg, a congressman and law professor who wanted to repay the life-saving grace. Mr. Hogg also returned the winning prize of 100,000 marks, together with the extraordinary lottery ticket, to Ole himself, who was rescued from the sea by all means through the navy, so that the Hulda family could be happily reunited.
