About This Novel

In the summer of 1989 in East Germany, 24-year-old college student Ed was hit hard by the unexpected death of his girlfriend. He chose to temporarily escape from his original life and came to Hiddensee Island alone. One part land, nine parts sky: Hiddensee is a resort, a land of freedom within borders, for those who enjoy bliss, for those who daydream and dance in their dreams, for the losers and the marginalized. Ed joined the Klausner Hotel on the island as a part-time dishwasher during the peak season. He met a group of colleagues with different personalities and backgrounds, including Crusoe, the spiritual leader of Hiddensee Island. He is a strange mixture, including almost ascetic strictness and self-denial, almost fanatical determination, a preference for fantasy and taboos, and his divine seriousness, quietly vibrating aura, or - Crusoe energy. On the island, a web of relationships and activities forms around Crusoe. Next to Crusoe, Ed tortured himself and his heart of giving up... However, as the current situation changes and the Berlin Wall collapses, the people on the island need to make new choices about where they will go...
