McCullers was only twenty-three years old when he published "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." This novel was a sensation in the literary world as soon as it came out. It is still a best-seller today. It is an important representative work of McCullers and is listed in the "Top 100 English Novels of the Twentieth Century" in the American Modern Library. The work describes the loneliness and frustration of five abnormal people in a southern town in the United States in the late 1930s - the deaf-mute Singer, the coffee shop owner Biff, the girl Mick, the worker Blunt, and the black doctor Copeland. This group of "small town freaks" compete and struggle with their inner world and real life all day long. They observe and watch each other, and sometimes they interact and attract each other; they repeatedly speculate and try, but they gradually drift away from their dreams. In this poor, dirty town, they were hit hard and bloody on the way to find a way out of life. Even with the deepest love, they could not escape the ultimate loneliness.
