Come up and Breathe (the Complete Works of Orwell's Novels)
About This Novel
The protagonist of "Come Breath", George Bolling, is a forty-five-year-old fat man who works as a district inspector in an insurance company. He has a high and low career. He has a wife and two children to support, and he is suffering from bills, tuition and other expenses all day long. By chance, a poster reminded him of his hometown by the Thames and his childhood life at that time. "Come Up for Breath" uses a two-line description. One line shows the impact and influence of the social changes characterized by industrialization and urbanization in Britain from before World War I to World War II on traditional small towns. The other main line brings out the respective reactions and actions of various social strata in response to the crisis of world war.
