About This Novel

In the past, my grandfather came here to reclaim wasteland and got the land; later, my father was born here, and he cleared the weeds and eliminated the poisonous snakes; then we were born here again, and my father had to borrow money from the bank. During the lean years, my father couldn't pay back the money, so the land belonged to the bank and we became tenant farmers. But we still stayed here and could still get a share of what we grew. Finally, the banks used tractors and no longer needed sharecroppers, and we were left without a home. Hundreds of thousands of people left their homes and headed for California along Route 66, because the leaflets said that California was full of farmland and full of jobs. We arrived in California and discovered that it was just a lie: the farmers deliberately attracted large numbers of people to try to keep wages low. We have to wander again, looking for work like mad dogs, we starve, we teeter on the edge of death.
