About This Novel

"Tian Ping Zhi Zhi" is the masterpiece of Yasushi Inoue's novels. Japan's Tianping period coincided with the prosperous Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty. In order to find the eminent monk who gave the ordination, four young Japanese monks were not afraid of hardships and dangers and sent the Tang envoy to the west. Monk Rongrui and Monk Puzhao went through many twists and turns, and finally got the permission of the eminent monk Jianzhen to go eastward. The old monk Ye Xing, who had been in the Tang Dynasty for fifty years, also returned with them, bringing the scriptures he had spent his whole life copying. After five failed attempts to cross the sea, everyone experienced ups and downs in the rolling waves. Some died in a foreign land, or their souls returned to the sea. Even though Jianzhen was blind, he still did not change his original intention. He finally arrived in Japan on his sixth eastward journey and became a monk at Todaiji Temple in Nara, leaving an indelible mark on the development of the culture of the Tianping era.
