About This Novel
"Local Anesthesia" is a novel by Glass. Eberhard Starusch, the former leader of the troublemaking gang in "The Tin Drum" and now a German and history teacher at a middle school in West Berlin, in 1967 collected information on a former Nazi general who attempted to use a sandbox to win the failed World War II after the war. But one thing was pressing for Starusch: One of his favorite students decided to burn his pet dog on one of Berlin's busiest streets to protest the U. S.'S use of napalm in the Vietnam War. Starusch tried to dissuade this move with self-righteous melancholy. Allowing a dentist to treat your teeth became the only symbol of progress: the only way to resist human pain was through local anesthesia.
