Sand Burial
by Cai Qikang
About This Novel
The six villages around Sand Town were not submerged by wind and sand like Lop Nur. They relied on two high and wide sand beams in the north and south, which acted like barriers to block the invasion of sandstorms. The people on this land have made too many hardships to survive. Every household must use a flat-headed shovel to clear sand in front of the door and around the base of the wall, otherwise the entire courtyard will be buried in sand. There is a special type of sand cleaning work on roads and dirt roads. Laifeng's father and daughter opened a tobacconist's shop in a small market street, and they had to pay eight yuan a month for sand cleaning. The market street is about 200 meters long, and there are thirty or forty small shops, all of which were transformed from the original small vendors. Laifeng's father set up a cigarette stall here thirty years ago, selling warrior, labor and prairie cigarettes that smell like sawdust. Nowadays, there are Hongtashan, Yunyan, Marlboro, Sanwupai... All kinds of brands, no less than thirty or forty types, on the shelves.
