At a book signing for my last book, a well-respected journalist asked me what else I planned to write. I said, Van Gogh. She was very surprised: "There are so many books about Van Gogh on the market, why are you still writing?" I asked back: "There are so many books about Van Gogh on the market, which one have you finished reading?" She thought for a while: "That's really not the case." I said, "What I want to write is a Van Gogh that everyone can read." This book does not intend to subvert most people's impressions of Van Gogh. After all, he was a real person. All I can do is to collect everything about him as comprehensively as possible, string together these real fragments with imagination and reasoning, and write a biography of Van Gogh that you can read from beginning to end.
