About This Novel
Anecdotes of Destiny was the last work published by Isaac Dinesen during his lifetime. The original version included five stories. The now more popular Vintage American edition also contains the story "Ehrengard" published a year after her death, and this book is translated from this edition. Among them, "Babette's Banquet" has been translated by the same team of translators under Project Gutenberg and published separately. The author of this book is Baronesse Karen von Blixen-Finecke (1885-1962), a modern Danish writer. Isak Dinesen is her most famous pen name (Dinesen is her maiden name). She writes in English, French and Danish, mostly in English. Her autobiography "Out of Africa" published in 1937 was adapted into a movie of the same name, which won seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director at the 58th Academy Awards in 1986. Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said in 2010 that it was a mistake not to award her the Nobel Prize for Literature.
