Eugene Sledge was not drafted because he suffered from a heart murmur. He said goodbye to his best friend Sidney Phillips, who was preparing to leave for boot camp. Eight months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 1st Marine Division landed on Guadalcanal to defend the strategically important U. S. Military airfield. Leckie and Phillips were in the unit at the time.
