About This Novel

Compared with Hu Shi's famous name, Xu Yisun is little known. However, Hu Shi's early life trajectory has a deep imprint of the latter. Whether it is Hu Shi's rise from degradation, taking the exam to go to the United States, or the "Diary of Hu Shi Studying Abroad" that has been handed down to this day, they are all closely related to him. Therefore, after Xu Yisun died young, Hu Shi wrote a nearly 7,000-word "Biography of Xu Yisun", which was sincere and touching. The correspondence between Hu Shi and Xu Yisun began in 1909 and ended in 1919. This was an important period in Hu Shi's life. The seven years he spent in the United States were an important period in the formation and evolution of his outlook on life and literature. His "A Preliminary Discussion on Literary Reform", which pioneered the literary revolution, was published in January 1917. The three years after returning to China were also at the peak of his advocacy of a new literary revolution. The "Collected Correspondence of Hu Shi and Xu Yisun" truly reflects Hu Shi's thoughts during this period from one aspect, and provides extremely precious first-hand information for the study of Hu Shi. This collection of correspondence is published publicly for the first time. It is a major discovery in Hu Shi's research and has high documentary and historical value.
