This book contains nearly 20 articles by the famous esthetician, literary theorist, educator, and translator Zhu Guangqian published in different journals in the last years of the Anti-Japanese War. They are mainly his "words about the joys and hardships of learning literature and art." Different from the general readings of Fangwen, it can be regarded as both an introductory book on literature and a theoretical work. As he said in his book, the key to learning literature for beginners is to "play more works by famous writers" and "practice writing more by yourself", "gradually develop a pure taste, and learn a writer's vision and sympathy for experiencing human feelings and objects."
