About This Novel
"Miscellaneous Notes of Weilu" is a collection of short essays written by Lin Shu, with more than 230 pieces in total. Most of the stories were witnessed by him personally. They involve rumors of officialdom and unofficial history since the Qing Dynasty, folk customs, literary anecdotes, etc. The language is concise and the narrative is vivid, which can well reflect the characteristics of the times when the customs of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China were emerging and the old and new cultures coexisted. Qian Zhongshu commented on "Miscellaneous Notes of Wei Lu": "After many years of obscene things, I get a glimpse of this old man's nature, which is humorous and gratifying."
