About This Novel

This book is based on the life of French post-Impressionist painter Gauguin. A broker of the British Stock Exchange who lived a stable life suddenly abandoned his wife and children and went to Paris to pursue his ideal of painting. In a foreign country, he not only suffered physically from poverty and hunger, but also endured mental pain in search of expression techniques. After some bizarre encounters, the protagonist finally leaves the civilized world and escapes to the isolated island of Tahiti, where he finds the tranquility of his soul and an atmosphere suitable for his artistic temperament. This book triggers people's thinking about breaking away from secular society and finding a spiritual home.

You need to be patient with Maugham's works. When you first read them, they feel a bit obscure, but slowly you will find that you like this feeling. This is the first time I read Somerset Maugham's works. I am very glad that I persisted in reading them to the end, otherwise I would have felt a pity. The first time I knew that Maugham was another of his works, but the first work I read was this one. I have to say that the process of reading was full of entanglements, all of which were for Strickland. On the one hand, it was disgust and disgust for him, feeling that he was too cold and arrogant. On the other hand, it was the admiration for his character. This contradictory feeling did not end until the ending of the story. Looking back, it has a different taste.

I didn't feel very good at first. I just knew that the vocabulary was very large and a lot of idioms were used. When I like it, I will finish the book and the English version will follow. Leprosy was indeed a serious disease in the past. There was an old man in our village who suffered from leprosy. Although he was later cured, the people in the village did not associate with him, and he lived a lonely life without ever marrying and having children. He prepared a coffin for himself and a lot of food. He hoped that his relatives would give him a good burial after his death. However, it was not as he thought. The tea was even colder after he left. His relatives buried him without thinking. I wonder who else in their family would burn some paper money for him. The poor old man was pitiful when he was alive and still pitiful when he left.

Too classic

The author writes so well, his analysis of human nature and his understanding of life are just right. There is also the protagonist's pursuit of ideals. This is the true ideal and belief. Who can do it?

Most stories about realizing one's ideals are inspirational, but this story written by Maugham gives people a rare, weird feeling. Strickland's determination to give up a comfortable life and separate himself from society in order to achieve his ideal state is difficult to understand. Perhaps this is more in line with the real state of human beings pursuing their ideals in reality. There is nothing true, good, beautiful, inspiring or touching, but only why he insists on it that he understands.

Rules no longer restrict people's hearts, the road no longer restricts feet, the world is big and you can go wherever you want. Just like Maugham, when he got tired of living in London, England, he went to live in Paris, France for a while... To get rid of the boredom of doing the same things and seeing the same scenery day after day. It is human nature to live in groups, and there may be people around you who disgust you. These people encourage the growth of tolerance. Just like Strickland, in order to satisfy his own whims, he would not hesitate to sacrifice the pain of others. I don't know whether it was his shamelessness and selfishness that made him a genius in painting, or it was his genius in painting that made him shameless and selfish? ! No matter what, people are infinitely tolerant and understanding, especially his three women... ????????? Kindness and cowardice turned Stroeve into a victim. For this reason, he couldn't resist the temptation to talk, and poured out his grievances to everyone. He expected sympathy, but was ridiculed for no reason. ????????? Both the author and the protagonist roam around like duckweeds. Occasionally they come to a place where they feel they belong, and then they settle down and it becomes their hometown for the rest of their lives. Humans are very strange things, the hateful ones make people hate them, the kind ones make people pity...
