About This Novel
This book is a collection of the novella "Heart of Darkness" by Polish-British writer Conrad and the novella "The Dead" by Irish writer Joyce. "Heart of Darkness" tells the story of Captain Marlowe's experience on the Congo River in Africa on a ship docked outside London. It narrates the story of the fall of a white colonist named Kurtz whom he met during his time in Africa. "The Dead" describes the daily life of the middle and lower class people in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Through the description of ordinary trivial matters, it shows the disillusionment and confusion caused by the narrow and vulgar social environment to people's ideals, hopes and pursuits.
