About This Novel
Before Legge, the linguist Sir William Jones (Sir W. Jones) had translated the Book of Songs in the 18th century. Legge also drew from it in the process of translating the Book of Songs. However, Sir William Jones's translation was rather borrowed from the title and was not a faithful reproduction of the Book of Songs. The "faithfulness" that translation emphasizes is by no means equal to "one-to-one correspondence." As far as poetry translation is concerned, it is not difficult to achieve the standard of "faithfulness", but to achieve "faithfulness", "expression" and "elegance" at the same time is simply as difficult as climbing to the sky. What is even more insurmountable is the gap of "meter".
