About This Novel

Mr. Cao Xianzhuo has devoted his life to the study of language and characters. He has conducted extensive research on the shape, sound and meaning of Chinese characters and achieved fruitful results. He has made outstanding achievements in the theory and practice of dictionary compilation. He once served as a special researcher at the Dictionary Research Center of the Commercial Press, and was extremely concerned and supportive of our library's dictionary publishing work. He has successively presided over the compilation and revision of many key dictionaries such as our Xinhua Dictionary and Xinhua Multifunctional Dictionary. He has taught and answered questions for our editors many times, and has established deep feelings and friendships with his colleagues in the library. Mr. Cao passed away in Beijing due to illness on November 7, 2018, at the age of 86. In order to commemorate Mr. Cao and express our grief, the Commercial Press decided to publish "A Gentleman's Mind, the Style of an Elder - A Collected Works in Commemoration of Mr. Cao Xianzhuo". "Collected Works" contains more than 60 commemorative articles and more than 30 photos written by Mr. Cao Xianzhuo's relatives, friends and students. From different aspects, they reflect Mr. Cao's demeanor as a person and teacher, as well as his achievements in language research, especially in the theory and practice of dictionary compilation.
