Thirty-six Pipes of Smoke and Water
About This Novel
"Thirty-Six Pipes of Smoke and Water" is a collection of selected prose by the Chinese-American writer Liu Huangtian. The title of the book comes from Wang Anshi's "Inscription on the Wall of Taiyi Palace in the West". It is divided into three series. The first series, "Sunset on the Tower", describes life abroad; the second series, "Wanting to See Jiangnan", describes the memories of the motherland; the third series, "Sitting and Watching the Clouds Rise", includes reading notes and argumentative articles. The author Liu Huangtian grew up in Taishan, the "hometown of overseas Chinese", and lived overseas for many years. He has vicissitudes of thought, keen vision, and sharp writing. From the various aspects of life in Chinatown, the joys and sorrows of new and old immigrants, to the infinite emotions of returning home after old age, his pen depicts the collision and blending of Chinese and Western cultures. Many chapters are both interesting and thought-provoking, and full of deep feelings about family and country.
