About This Novel

This book contains two classic plays by Hauptmann. Among them, "The Weavers" is based on the 1844 Silesian weavers' uprising. It has epoch-making significance. The oppressed and exploited workers in the play appear on the stage as heroic figures for the first time. The script points out to people: Keeping oneself in peace can only lead to massacre by the enemy. The only way to survive is to rise up and fight. The bellsmith in "The Sinking Bell" went through many hardships in order to cast a grand bell, but never succeeded. He swayed between secular society and the fairy world, confused. It expresses the artist's contradiction between lofty ideals and worldly pursuits.
