The Compson family is a famous family in Jefferson Town. Their ancestors once served as governors and generals, but they have declined by Jason Compson's generation. The Compsons have three sons and one daughter, but their relationship is not happy. The second daughter, Xiaoka, was so willful that she became pregnant out of wedlock. The eldest brother, Quentin, had been obsessed with his sister since he was a child. Inspired by Cam's loss of virginity and marriage, he committed suicide by sinking into a river while studying at Harvard. Quentin's suicide dealt a heavy blow to Mr. Compson, who was already depressed because of Cam. He soon passed away, and his third son Jason became the head of the family. Jason is withdrawn, has mediocre talents, and his greedy nature eventually makes him difficult. The youngest son Benjamin is mentally retarded. Only his sister Xiaoka and the black maid Dilsey gave him real care.
