About This Novel
During the Cultural Revolution, a group of young girls were sent to the desolate prairie in northwest China. They formed a sacred and solemn collective, the Women's Horse Herding Class, to herd military horses in the harsh grassland climate and environment. The story begins with "Xiao Dian'er", a beautiful girl who has committed incest, theft, and murder, mixed into the women's horse herding class, and observes this female monk-like group from her perspective. Their youth and life were stifled by the absurd sublimity and holiness, and their young bodies and souls were ultimately given to the altar of the so-called "ideal".
