Alive (starring Ge You, Gong Li)
by Yu Hua
About This Novel
The movie "Alive" of the same name was directed by Zhang Yimou and starred two great actors and actresses, Ge You and Gong Li. In 1994, the film won the Jury Prize and Best Actor Award at the 47th Cannes Film Festival. It also won important awards such as the British Academy Film Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The TV series "Rich" adapted from "Alive" was launched in 2005. At the 13th Shanghai TV Festival, it won the "Magnolia" Award - the TV Drama Jury Grand Prize. "Alive" is a novel that makes people feel heavy when reading it. The vague discomfort you feel only when you close the book is not caused by the cruelty of the story provided by the work. After all, the stories in the work about the death of a family, the loss of a wife, the loss of a daughter, and a white-haired man giving a black-haired man a gift are not sensational. At the same time, Yu Hua is not a writer with strong provocative ability. In fact, Yu Hua has always disdained such expressions. What Yu Hua advocates is narrative, using an almost cold tone to narrate some stories that are actually not normal. And all the emotions quietly invade the reader's reading in the process of this eloquent narration. In this way, "Alive" completes a philosophical inquiry on the meaning of life with a penetrating expression technique. This book won the Grinzana Carver Literary Award in Italy (1998), the China Times Ten Good Book Award in Taiwan (1994), the Boyi 15 Good Book Award in Hong Kong (1990), the Chinese Book Special Contribution Award (2005), and the French Courier International Foreign Novel Award ( 2008); and was selected as one of the "Top 100 Chinese Novels of the 20th Century" selected by Hong Kong's Asia Weekly; selected as one of the "Top 10 Most Influential Works of the 1990s" selected by one hundred Chinese critics and literary editors. Yu Hua himself was awarded the French Chevalier des Lettres et des Arts in 2004.

After reading it, I realized that I was still a child
Life will give you the hope you want, and it will also give you unexpected disillusionment, forcing you to fall into unpredictable joys, sorrows, and joys. Tragedy will torture you, destroy you, and finally succeed in shaping you into a tragic hero. A person who has seen so many life and death farewells and sent away so many people will naturally accept his own dying days. When the era extinguishes light and shadow, society closes its eyes, there will be countless wails of resentful spirits outside the dome, and all the deafening enlightenment will point to the most fundamental longing of human beings - to live! Fate and reality played a double act, and it was myself who was crying both inside and outside the play.
An arrogant young man from a wealthy family who was addicted to gambling and lost all his family property suddenly realized that he had started a new life, and experienced the joys and sorrows of life. Along the way, his father, son, daughter, mother, son-in-law and grandson died one after another. I think if time could go back to that night of gambling with Long Er, Fugui would still choose to lose all his family fortune, even if he knew that his relatives would leave one by one. There is one word that runs through the entire article, and that is "cow". The creed passed down from generation to generation of the Xu family is to transform the Xu family from chickens to geese to sheep and then to cows. When it comes to Fugui, it returns to chickens. At the end of the article, Fugui named the cow Fugui. Fugui thinks that he is now a cow - although not a cow with a fat brain, but a cow who is responsible and independent from the world. The deep-rooted values of the Xu family are completely subverted and sublimated in Fugui.
I have known about this book for a long time, but never had the courage to read it. It's too heavy, I'm afraid I can't bear it... Today I finally gathered some strength, and after watching it I was still out of breath. What are you going through? How strong of a heart do you need to survive? It seems that the narrative method slowly tells the details of life, but the writing method of this cold will really makes me feel that it is a cruel reading! Fortunately, Fugui's summary of himself is: Sometimes I feel sad when I think about it, but sometimes I feel very at ease when I think about it! !
Come on, let's do a little survey. At what age are the people reading this book?
I'm here first, I'm a middle school student.

How many people came to see it because of Yi Yang Qianxi?
Does anyone come from Douyin?
After reading this book, I was reminded of a sentence: If someone is alive, he is already dead, and if someone is dead, he is still alive. What is the boundary between life and death? All of this is only meaningful to those who are alive and can see through it. For Fugui, although his relatives have passed away, they are still alive in his heart. He can remember the past so clearly, how many nights does it take him to talk to them. People are born and walk in this world, and if they can keep warmth, touch, and cherishment in their hearts, death is nothing to be afraid of. It's good to be alive.
For Qianxi
I was very impressed and it became the truth of life. This should be the so-called star effect. How many people come to see it for Qian Xi? Just raise your paw.
A life like an epiphyllum, self-aware of warmth and coldness
Yu Hua said, "Life belongs to everyone's own feelings and does not belong to anyone's opinions." In the chaotic world, all fates are like a canoe on a huge sea. What Fugui experienced was the departure of his relatives one by one. In the end, only Fugui's old cow was left to depend on him. Maybe this life is too miserable, but maybe not because he once met a wife who could always understand him, tolerate him, and love him, as well as Fengxia, who is so sensible, and Youqing, who is well-behaved. There are so many people who are unforgettable for him. They share the hardships with him during his most difficult time. Is this life as narrow as a hand or as broad as the earth? I know whether I am warm or cold. No one knows.
How many people read this book because of its connotation and jokes?

[House of Divine Works] When I was in college, I was particularly fascinated by Yu Hua for a while, but I mostly read the stories he wrote about youth on the streets. Later, I saw Alive, but I didn't understand it that well at that time. Later I saw the movie version of "Alive" and I didn't like it too much because the almost despairing sadness was downplayed. This book may make you breathless. You will see that life is one tragedy after another strung together by living. But you will not understand until you truly mature. In life, we have to endure one unsatisfactory one after another. No matter whether you are successful or not and how much assets you have, the sad thing is that most of the time we cannot even have a clear grief, but despair is actually deeper. This is living.

[Literature] Regarding the book "Alive", after reading the whole book, I was reminded that in the modern history from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the folk customs of the entire ordinary people were both simple and ignorant. Many things didn't seem to be developing like this, but they happened to happen. The story of Fugui, at worst, is that the sins committed when he was young must be paid back in old age. The life of a family lies in this backward history... People always appear ignorant in aspects that they are not good at. The whole story is unfortunate, but when he paid off his sins, none of his family blamed him... After the age when he knew his destiny, after the past, he still had Lao Niu as his companion, as if he was still alive and happy after he was relieved. The death of younger generations is entirely caused by social backwardness and ignorance. After reading this, my mind is filled with ignorant people... It's so uncomfortable. We should strengthen ourselves!
