About This Novel
The novel is set in a ten-story apartment building at 11 rue Simon Clobelier in the 17th arrondissement of Paris and tells the story of the people who live there. This apartment building was cut open vertically by the author, and the rooms, corridors, elevators, and basements were divided into a chess board with 10 squares horizontally and vertically. Except for the square in the lower left corner, the remaining 99 squares correspond to a chapter in the book. The author starts from the corridor on the fourth floor and describes the objects, characters, and stories in each grid in turn. The order of description follows the steps of the knight in chess. Repeat, the story ends in the room on the immediate left side of the fourth floor. The entire novel methodically depicts the all-encompassing lives of 1,468 characters according to a strict mathematical structure.
