About This Novel
"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is a semi-autobiographical novel written by American writer Betty Smith, first published in 1943. There are no weird and exciting plots in the book, but it touches people's hearts with plain and delicate experiences. It tells the story of the little girl Francie Nolan's growing up experience in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York in the early 20th century. She suffered from family misfortune, discrimination from classmates and social injustice while growing up. However, under the care and influence of her relatives, she loved reading, was strong and unyielding, and was full of enthusiasm for life. She was admitted to university by self-study after work, and finally walked out of the slums. It shows the courage of ordinary people to pursue their dreams and face the hardships of life calmly.
