About This Novel
"The Deer Park" tells the story of Jody, a boy who lives with his parents on the Florida island during the Reclamation Era after the American Civil War, and his one-year-old fawn. The first half of the novel is busy and sweet. Penny, a hard-working and honest man who longs for peace, comes to the land to build a warm home for his wife and children. There are also moments of leisure and tranquility in the barren and difficult land life - the phantoms of Spanish knights, the thrills of fox hunting, bear hunting, and wolf hunting all make life on the land seem busy and joyful. Penny subtly guides Jodi with his simple and kind outlook on life. In the jungle, there are charming and changing scenery, as well as amazing animal wonders.
