The novel "The Fish King" is Astafiev's most unique masterpiece and a classic of contemporary Russian literature. The book is composed of thirteen "narrative short stories" with relatively independent contents, all centered on the relationship between man and nature. It depicts Siberia full of mysterious temptations in depth and detail, as well as the people living there, and their reflections on life. The desolate, bitter and cold natural environment is at the same time a place where nature shows its majesty, vastness and richness. Although human footprints are like claws in snow and mud, they still carry the dignity of endless life. These chapters show a unique style in terms of ideological content and artistic form, downplaying the plot, and describing the details delicately and vividly. They "integrate novels, novellas, lyrical essays, and moral discussions into one" (Wang Xiaobo). They reveal coherent content and images from different angles and methods, just like a string of pearls strung inadvertently, each one reflecting dazzling light with its own beauty.
