Jack Duluoz (aka Jack Kerouac) is a seventeen-year-old high school track and field athlete and football star. He met Maggie Cassidy, who was one year older than him, at the New Year's Dance in 1938, and then began this innocent and sentimental first love story. Kerouac uses his unique language and expression to recall life in the small town of Lowell, Massachusetts before World War II, telling the story of his first love, his upbringing, his first experiences leaving home, and the process of becoming Kerouac, the most experimental writer of his era.
