About This Novel

In "The Girl with Wings", Heidi Grimke ("Little Trouble") was an urban slave girl in Charleston in the early 19th century. The fence in the Grimke family yard enclosed her entire world, and she wanted to go out and see it. Sarah, the daughter of the Grimke family, knew that she would do something in this world since she was a child, but because of her identity as a "female", she struggled. The story begins in 1803, Sarah's 11th birthday, and the 10-year-old "Little Trouble" was given to Sarah as a personal maid as a birthday gift. Over the next 35 years, we followed them on this extraordinary journey: they all fought to have their own lives and decided each other's fate. At the same time, their relationship was entangled with guilt, resistance, alienation, and hard-earned love.
