Hellish scenes were shown to the eyes of the twelve-year-old Anka again and again, including cattle cars filled with bodily fluids and corpse odor, a bloody hell under rain of bullets, and a death concentration camp filled with stench. From Romania to Bucharest in Poland, and then to the notorious Auschwitz, the twelve-year-old Anka, his young brother Nikolai, and the nine-year-old Jewish girl Ilo depend on each other on the road to find their relatives. They are weak but brave, upright but ignorant, like a cruel fairy tale. What kind of ending is waiting for them?
