White Castle (collector's Edition)
About This Novel
The almost sadomasochistic/masochistic relationship between the two protagonists of Nobel Prize winner Pamuk's autobiographical work "White Castle" is based on the competitive relationship between the author and his brother. In the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century, a learned Venetian young man was captured to Istanbul and became a slave of the Turk Hoja. The two were extremely similar in appearance. Hoja ordered the Venetians to teach him all scientific and cultural knowledge and exchange all the details of his life experiences with him. They join forces to deal with a plague sweeping Turkey, Hoja is promoted to astrologer in the palace, and the Venetian becomes the Sultan's confidant. In order to attack a white castle in the west, the two worked together to invent a war weapon. However, the war failed, and one of them disappeared in the thick fog. The other person who stayed behind wrote all their stories.
