Han Bangqing's "Biographies of Shanghai Flowers" is a novel that describes the daily life in Shanghai brothels in the late Qing Dynasty. It touches on many social levels such as officialdom and business circles. The author uses seemingly calm words to describe the social life of the time when there was a great disparity between the rich and the poor and the distinction between high and low. It was once called "the first masterpiece of Wu-language literature" by Hu Shi, and Lu Xun once praised it for its "calm and close to nature" charm. Zhang Ailing regarded "The Biography of Shanghai Flowers" as another peak of traditional novels after "Dream of Red Mansions" and highly praised it. In order to remove the obstacles that the Wu dialogues in the book pose to readers, she translated them all into Mandarin, hoping that more people would read and value this novel. It is divided into two books: "Flowers Blooming on the Sea" and "Flowers Falling on the Sea".
