About This Novel
"Portrait of a Lady" describes the story of how the young, beautiful, lively, cheerful and fantasy American girl Isabel faces a series of choices such as love, marriage, life and destiny. After her father's death, Isabel was taken to London by her aunt and inherited a large inheritance. She successively rejected the proposals of the American rich man Caspar Goodwood and the British Lord Warburton, but she chose the American "art connoisseur" Gilbert Osmond living in Italy. She married him regardless of the warnings and objections of her relatives and friends. But soon after the marriage, she discovered that the marriage was a complete conspiracy... Translation description: The novel "Portrait of a Lady" was first published in serial form in the British "Macmillan's Magazine" from October 1880 to November 1881. Between June and September 1881, Henry James revised the novel based on the above-mentioned serial version, and then sent it to Houghton, Mifflin and Company in the United States for publication in a single volume. This version was launched in October of the same year. A month later, the British publishing company Macmillan & Co. Launched the British version of the novel based on the American version. In 1907, Henry James completely revised the novel based on the American edition and published it in a 24-volume collection of novels (the "New York Edition") compiled by himself. The content of this edition is quite different from the 1881 edition. This translation is from the 1986 edition of "Portrait of a Lady" published by Oxford University Press. The original version used is the 1907 "New York Edition". There is a preface by the author before the text.
