About This Novel

"Effie Brister" is the masterpiece of the German writer Fontana's novel. The work describes the marriage tragedy of the aristocratic lady Effie Brister. Effie's parents made the decision to marry the seventeen-year-old Effie to the county magistrate Yin Shitton, who was twenty-one years older than him. Effie is far removed from her husband in terms of age and relationship. She cheated on her because she was seduced by the playboy Krambas. Afterwards, she regretted it. Six years later, Instaton discovered Krambas's love letter, killed Krambas in a duel, and divorced Effie. Effie was also rejected by her parents due to customary reasons. She rented a small house alone with her maid, and became depressed and ill, and eventually died of illness at her parents' home. Through Effie's marriage and love tragedy, the author exposes and criticizes the hypocrisy and cruelty of the moral customs of the Prussian aristocracy.
