About This Novel
In the early morning of August 14, 1900, with a burst of intensive artillery fire, the heavy city gate of Beijing's Xizhimen collapsed to the ground. Under the cover of fire, soldiers of the Eight-Power Allied Forces swarmed into the undefended city gate. The Qing army and the Boxers, who had resisted ten days here, had now dispersed. Allied commander Waldersee, surrounded by his subordinates, stepped over the corpses of Qing soldiers and Boxer martyrs, stepped on the city bricks that had been blasted by artillery fire, and climbed to the city gate. On the archery tower that was riddled with holes by artillery fire, he looked eastward. Under the morning light, the Forbidden City with yellow tiles and red walls looked more and more mysterious. He narrowed his eyes slightly, with an expression that was both admiring and proud. At this time, an officer ran up to him and asked: "Mr. Commander, what is the next step for the army?" Waldersee asked humorously: "What do you think? Dear sir."
