Gu Yanwu (AD 1613-1682), named Tinglin, was born in Qiandun Town, Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. His original name was Jiang, but he changed his name to Yanwu after entering the Qing Dynasty. Guizhuang, courtesy name Xuan Gong, was the great-grandson of Gui Youguang, a great prose writer. He was well versed in his family's studies and was especially good at writing large characters in wild cursive and ink bamboo.
