Night Passes

About This Novel
The English translation of "NightWatch" was published in 1990. It won the Icelandic Literature Award in the same year as soon as it was published. In 1992, it also won the Nordic Council Literary Award. It was the second Icelandic literary work to win the award. The story takes place in the magnificent scenery of the Westfjords of Iceland, and the description of nature also forms part of the magic of the text. The novel tells a family story from the perspective of the protagonist Nina using an unusual narrative technique. During the three nights before her mother died, Nina stayed at her bedside. As the night passed, she had nothing to do but look back on herself and her family. The external structure of the novel is these three nights. Nina comes from the extremely remote countryside of northwest Iceland, but she is a typical modern woman. She doesn't believe in love, is very independent financially and ideologically, and is currently the owner of an advertising company. She once dreamed of becoming a writer, but under the pressure of life, she gave up her dream of being a writer - now she records these stories in front of her mother's hospital bed, and the writer Nina was born. The novel ends with uncertainty, as Nina asks herself: "Now, what do I do?"
