Weaving stories. This paragraph is the beginning of the novel. The story talks about a few strange people and a strange house, as well as the "border town" and Haiyu. These are quite "fringe" and unfamiliar, but they are things that may have existed in the past. The word plague used in the story has some basis in historical facts, but it is exaggerated. Ultimately, the story tries to tell something about the cruelty, sharpness, coldness, darkness and warmth of cultural collision. Even today, seventy years later, it is not common for foreigners to appear in this small town. Residents of the small town at that time often encountered a young foreign woman leading a group of female students, playing in the woods and creeks beside the city wall and on the beach outside the city, and singing hymns in the church outside the north gate of the city.
