About This Novel
After World War I, Barnes, an American young man living in Paris, worked as a reporter for a newspaper and fell in love with Mrs. Ashley from England. Due to being injured in the war and losing his sexual ability, Barnes has never been able to truly combine with Mrs. Ashley. He often drowns his sorrows in alcohol and tries to forget the pain under anesthesia, but to no avail. The two went to Spain with a group of friends to participate in the bullfighting festival. Mrs. Ashley, who is romantic and pleasure-seeking by nature, fell in love with Romero, a much younger bullfighter. Although Mrs. Ashley ended her relationship with Romero and returned to Barnes, they both knew in their hearts that they could never truly be together.
