About This Novel
The Book of Songs and The Songs of Chu respectively opened up the two major sources of realism and romanticism in Chinese literature. The Book of Songs is generally an ancient ballad from the Yellow River Basin, and the Songs of Chu can almost be regarded as the swan song of the literati from the Yangtze River Basin. The former is sober realism, the latter is active romanticism.
