Pelliot's Beijing Diary
by Xiao Jing
About This Novel
"Pelliot's Beijing Diary" is Pelliot's personal record of the Boxer Rebellion. From 1899 to 1901, Pelliot traveled throughout Vietnam and China. When the Boxer Rebellion broke out, he happened to be in Beijing and witnessed the entire process of the embassy area being besieged by the Boxers. As the situation developed, he took some time to record what he saw and heard on small pieces of paper. The diary written under this special environment is scattered and fragmented, but it has a sense of being on the spot. The editors of the Collège de France identified and sorted out the diary manuscripts in detail, presented them as they were, and supplemented them with Pelliot's diary when he lived in the Far East for the second time, so as to present as completely as possible the adventurous Eastern academic journey of this academic master in his youth.
