Red Earth: the Existence and Time of an Immigrant Village
by Xia Youzhi
About This Novel
Chishan is a small village in the hilly areas of central China. I want to write about the changes in this village in the past 40 years. In these 40 years, almost all villages have experienced a kaleidoscope of dramatic transformations, and the relationship between the state and society, the economic structure, the emotional world, international networks and the perception of time are no exception. I am a witness, witness and observer of the history of this insignificant little village, as well as its narrator. But this book also wants to write about those things that will remain the same in the foreseeable future, especially the geographical and institutional existence spaces, which are huge, macroscopic, and well-structured, and have significantly shaped our concepts and behavioral patterns. I wonder what these things mean for the future of the village. The way this book is written is special. Personal memories are just one of the clues in the book, and narrative and explanation will be woven together. I want to explore various personal genres through this book, hoping to eventually present a distinctive language style - it should be between academic discourse and social science discourse. Although it is fundamentally a non-fiction work, it can in some places contain the characteristics of fictional works.
