About This Novel

On the afternoon of March 17, 1946, the C-47 No. 222 Special plane of Dai Li, director of the Kuomintang Military Command Bureau, crashed in Daishan, Banqiao Town, Jiangning County, near Nanjing. None of the thirteen people on the special plane, including Dai Li and the director of the military personnel department, Gong Xianfang, survived. Dai Li's machine was destroyed, and everyone died, from Chiang Kai-shek to the military commanders and chiefs. On April 1st, the routine commemoration meeting for the establishment of military unification became Dai Li's memorial service. All the heads of internal and external service of the military command were present. Chiang Kai-shek also attended the memorial service and officiated with tears in his eyes. Dai Li's tomb site was selected by Chiang Kai-shek himself, and he was buried on the right side of Zhigong Hall next to Linggu Temple in Nanjing.
