Since 1935, Trigev Halfdan Ley has served as Norway's Minister of Justice and Minister of Trade. After the outbreak of World War II, Germany occupied Norway in 1940, and Lie served as foreign minister of the government-in-exile. In April 1945, Lie led the Norwegian delegation to the United Nations preparatory conference in San Francisco and served as chairman of the Third Committee, which was responsible for drafting the provisions of the Charter on the Security Council. On February 1, 1946, Lie was elected as the first Secretary-General of the United Nations. During his tenure, he supported Indonesia's independence movement, promoted the Soviet Union's withdrawal from Iran, a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, and advocated the acceptance of the People's Republic of China to replace the Republic of China as China's official representative at the United Nations. "For Peace" chronicles Lie's personal experience from his participation in the preparations for the establishment of the United Nations in 1945 to his resignation as Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1952. He was a witness to the initial stage of the United Nations and the dramatic changes in the world political landscape after the end of World War II, and was the coordinator to resolve a series of regional political and military conflicts in the early Cold War.
