Selected Poems of Shevchenko
About This Novel
Shevchenko was Ukraine's first outstanding folk poet and was known as the "Kobcha (a Ukrainian string instrument) singer". His poems adopt simple folk forms, and their main content is to reflect the suffering life of the Ukrainian people and express his love for his hometown. The collection of poems "Kobza Singer" published in 1840 is in the form of folk songs, and the content shows a protest against the reality of serfdom. Among them, the long poem "Caterina" describes the pain and death of a bullied woman and exposes the hypocrisy of the tsarist officers. It is one of his masterpieces. In 1841, he published the long lyric poem "Haidamark", praising the Ukrainian peasants' historical struggle against the Polish aristocratic landowners. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1845 and was awarded the title of Free Artist. Chapters such as "Dream", "Caucasus" and "Testament" in the collection of poems all have a strong revolutionary tendency against national oppression and the autocratic system, marking a new stage in the poet's creation. Late poetry called on the people to rise up in revolution. His creations had a significant impact on Ukrainian literature.
