About This Novel
Shakespeare or Cervantes, Homer or Dante, Chaucer or Rabelais, the real function of reading their works is to enhance the growth of the inner self. Deep study of the scriptures does not make people better or worse, nor does it make citizens more useful or harmful. The mind's self-talk is not inherently a social reality. The whole point of the Western classics is to enable people to make good use of their loneliness, the ultimate form of which is a person's encounter with his own death.
