About This Novel

"The Merchant of Venice" is Shakespeare's early comedy work. The book tells the story of Antonio, a kind and loyal Venetian businessman, who borrowed usury from the ruthless Jewish businessman Shylock on behalf of his friend Bassanio, and used his merchant ship as a mortgage. Shylock wanted to take the opportunity to cut Antonio's flesh and agreed. But something happened to Antonio's merchant ship, and Shylock took Antonio to court. In court, the clever Portia promised Shylock that he could cut off any piece of Antonio's flesh, but if a drop of blood was shed (the contract only stated one pound of flesh, but did not promise to give Shylock any drop of blood), his life and property would be exchanged. In the end Antonio is rescued and everyone gets a happy ending except Shylock.

Each of Shakespeare's works is worth reading again and again, and a few sentences can tell a true story of life.
